1. Participate in the synthesis of plant hormone ethylene
As an important hormone regulating substance in crop growth and development, ethylene plays an important role in many stages of the crop growth cycle. Methionine is the precursor of ethylene synthesis. First, methionine generates ethylene under the action of adenosylmethionine synthetase aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC) synthetase and ACC oxidase (ACO), thereby promoting cell expansion and transformation of organic substances, and promoting fruit maturity, It can also promote the synthesis of cell wall degrading enzymes, force leaves, flowers or fruits to fall off mechanically, and improve crop drought resistance.
2. Participate in the synthesis of polyamines
Polyamine is a growth regulator of crops, which participates in important physiological processes such as crop growth and development, gender differentiation, fruit ripening and senescence, and adaptation to adversity. Methionine, a common precursor for ethylene and polyamine synthesis, can compete with ethylene synthesis to synthesize precursors. Therefore, polyamines can delay senescence by inhibiting ethylene synthesis. At the membrane level, polyamines can regulate the physical and chemical properties of the membrane, Stabilize the molecular composition on the membrane, eliminate active oxygen free radicals, and play a role in resisting adverse environment.

Methionine is a sulfur-containing amino acid. Sulfur deficiency will hinder protein synthesis.
